Clock work orange

Clockwork orange.
Whilst talking to miss about our music worries and how it won't be scary enough she mentioned that allot of films build up tension without scary music. She told me to look at 'Clockwork Orange' the scene were the woman get basically harassed, but there singing!
Obviously our film is not going to be anything like this, but it shows it can work in an intense scene with soft music. I this clip actually made me laugh, wasn't scared at all that the woman was getting harassed and there singing!

Third audience review.

Audience review.

On Friday I was in the library with Danielle, Trisha and myself as we all had free period. We was arranging times for when next to film and that should be in a couple of weeks.
We kept on looking over at our film on YouTube trying to find out any bad points. Although this isn't actually going to be our film what so ever, parts are going to be featured in this.
We asked about ten people all of our age in the library to see their reaction to our film also with the music.

Bearing in mind the criticisms we've encountered in the last showing we wanted to see if people had the same criticism. Before a few people said the music sounded like a romance more than a thriller. Most people we showed this to seemed to really like it and asked many questions to what will happen next, however we were mainly focusing on the music to see their opinion on it. There were mixed responses really, some seemed to love it as it gave an intense build-up, were as likewise to before some weren't scared and found it cheesy. However they said it would be brilliant if we add more layers to the sound wit scary effects like blade and heartbeat sounds which we were thinking of doing anyway!

At least we know now for definite what type of music we want from the reviewing's and the garage band session! We hope to be showing the stages of our film often to get helpful criticisms to improve our film.

Garage band

CLC
Yesterday was our second trip to the CLC, however this time was for the use of Garage band and not editing! Although we haven't quite finished our editing yet we needed to start creating our music or we'll never finish our product! Miss gave us a demo video before to look at, but had no idea how Garage Band worked, so this session really helped.

We got to the CLC about 1:45pm and went strait upstairs to use the macs, firstly our group were on separate macs to investigate different sounds after having a tutorial on how to use garage band properly which was a relief!
Danielle, Trisha and I eventually got together and started trying to create a music base for our film. We found a very similar beat to that of 'Damian Rice' called Emotional piano 03, however playing around with this we started to add more beats on top and found a really good violin sound which fits in well. However I really didn't think our music sounded at all similar to a horror. However miss re-assured us that sometimes it sounds better if the music isn't tense because then you can't anticipate what is going to happen next and to build up and intense atmosphere.
We also found some really good scary sounds we could layer on top of the piano sound. We filtered all other sounds just to dark and intense. This way specific sounds would only come up, we found some very good beats which were thinking of using every time the killer is on screen.
I was also thinking it's going to be very hard for us to fit the sounds in time for every scene.

Whilst listening to the tutorial I learned some very useful tips, I found out that you can change the pitch of the sounds, but also make the sound start of quiet and gradually build up. This gives an intense build up, like that of the movie 'Jaws.' Also you can actually play around with the sound so it can just come through one headphone then come through the other, this gives a sense of realism and shock to the audience.

We have a few more garage band sessions to come, so hopefully we'll be creating the prefect piece to go with our film.

Uploading raw footage

Uploading 1

Today our group managed to upload all our film progress after school for the third and fourth day of filming.
Watching back all of our filming, was enjoyable and I think we've made significant progress. However I did notice parts which were not as good as we'd like them to be. For example the ally shots which I loved filming will most probably have to be shot again. This is due to the contrast of the shots. It's to dark as we filmed this at night, I recommend next time we film about 4/5 when it just starts to get dark. Bearing that in mind if the contrast was brighter these shots would be prefect to use.
We were all thinking about this scene and thought we could do it in a forest by Forty Hill. The 'Hans Moleman' video we found on YouTube' inspired this, as the forest would be even more of a creepy place. We'll probably shoot both takes and see how it turns out.

However on the third day of filming when we shot the killer in the layre this turned out exactly what I hoped for! The visuals were gory and creepy which fits in perfectly to the scene.
However there were shots on this day which weren't as good as we hoped. For example when the killer is walking from his van to his door, most of this is to dark to see because we filmed about 8pm. We'll have to re-shoot all of this.
As we don't have the camera with us anymore we'll have to wait a couple of weeks and start editing in the meantime!

similar products

Inspiring and similar work

Whilst browsing YouTube I found this video of someones editing work called 'Hans The Moleman' and found it fascinating! The way this person has added effects and sounds is really good! This is the idea I had in mind of what our film opening would be like. It kind of is like our film ideas as there are sudden flashes to the newspaper articles and then back to the film and also the fade In's and outs and also how the colour changes to red. This is a great effect as it breaks the up dull colours, we could use something like that in our film as most of it is shot i night mode.
The music used in conjunction to this is fits is perfectly, however not really what we were thinking of going for though since this video is slightly more edgy than ours though there is a beat in this music which we were thinking of doing because its like a heart beat and this could be very effective. I also loved the shakey camera movements, we thought this could be effective in our film since when a camera movement isn't smooth it adds more of an edge to a film. When I shot using the hand held down the ally way this is the same sort effect.
Towards the end of this slip there is a part with silence and then a scream or a fuzzy background noise, it sounds really believable. There are allot of forest clips in this film which gives of a spooky lonely feel.

Alley way scene - extra footage

Raw footage

Here are a few snippets of the footage we took. We've decided were not sure if were going to use most of it. I think were going to scarp the alley way bit were he grabs her. However we might use it in a flashback; but most of the footage is to dark.

In this scene this is the girl walking from her house across the road.

This is an over the shoulder shot of the killer following the girl into the alley way.

This reaction shot of the victim would give more tension.

This is the killer hiding in the bushes waiting for the victim to walk past.

As you can see most of these shots are quite dark and would corrupt the continuity of the film. They was just an idea; however we could maybe
use them later on as flashbacks!

Fourth day of filming.

Filming day 4
.
Today was our 4th film session of the second idea we thought of. We filmed this by Danielle Flood (the killers) house. She had a really good ally way. The ally was narrow with bushes and trees arching the top. I thought this would be a very good scene for a lone girl to be walking home and someone grabs her. I also made sure we story boarded the scenes so we know exactly what will happen next, there is a snippet from our story board at the bottom of this post, I did the story board using the computer as it was easier and quicker this way.

Firstly we started of the girl coming out of her house.
(As the killers house wasn't right by the ally we had use a random house and Trisha went into the gate and came out to close it, we asked permission of course and the lady was very accepting) With Danielle (killer) waiting close by; the victim crossed the road. This was taken in a wide shot to get a bigger picture of the surroundings. I then panned across the victim crossing the road. This is when Danielle (the killer) comes on screen and appears from no-where to follow the girl leading to the ally way.
(This shot took many tries as people kept walking past, and cars kept going past!)
Once half way down the road I had to change camera positions so both actors had to stay in the same place so continuity would be precise. I changed from the tri-pod to handheld to follow the victim and killer down the ally way. This was taken in an over the shoulder shot from the killer, we carried this on till we got to the end of the ally way. I also zoomed in on the killers feet and the victims feet, this would give an edgy effect as the girl realises she' not alone by the sound of fast pacing footsteps behind her.

We decided that it could be scarier if we see the girl actually being grabbed then the camera would cut of instead of just seeing the killer following. However this would be implied in the audience's mind. So we decided to do two takes of the different endings.
This wasn't part of the storyboard, but we thought; may aswel shoot it and see what it turns out like!
We had to shoot the ally way bit again and when she crosses the road.
We decided we didn't want to see the killer until half way down the ally and then he'd appear from behind her. This would create tension for the audience as they would be anticipating what was going to happen next.
firstly for this take I followed the girl from her house which was shot on the tri-pod, then changed to hand held when following her down the ally then gave a queue for when Danielle (killer) to appear and to start following the girl. Just before the killer would appear I changed to the tri-pod again making sure the Trisha stood still so continuity wouldn't be effected. Using the tri-pod for this is a good effect because as the killer appears and starts following her,the two char actors would get further away form the camera and in the distance you see the girl being grabbed. This is effective as the audience see the crime being commited, but are unsure of the outcome.
We took many different shooting of this with the killer waiting in different places, one was a bush, the other was an old fence cramped in a corner and behind a building. This way we can fit the best one to the scene when we edit.
When Danielle (killer) grabbed Trisha (victim) she made a struggling sound, this sound effect makes the scene more realistic and the audience even more tense.

I'm looking forward to uploading and editing now!

Vampire Diaries 2010

Flashbacks

Whilst watching ITV2 a really good advert for a new TV series came on. It's called 'Vampire
Diaries.' I'd never heard of this before, but apparently it was out in 2010 and it's a new series.
However the thing that interested me the most was the advert itself. I love the dull kind of negative effect and the music gives a creepy feel. Also there is a white transition in the clip which is exactly what we want for our flashbacks!

Third day of filming

Third day of filming.

Today was our 3rd film session of the first idea we thought of.
We filmed the killers layre at Danielle's house (the actor) as she had
a really good place to film. Trisha and I were filming as Danielle
couldn't make it. We firstly started of by getting the layre ready which was in a small airing cupboard at the bottom of her house. Using the newspapers I'd produced previously we stuck them all over the walls and splattered some with blood and cobwebs.
This made a creepy effect to the scene, also with the bloody knife in the corner.
Trisha and I were also the Police woman as we had no other actors which were available so we made do. Were not sure how this part turned out so might try and re-shoot this later on in the week.

We then filmed the killer walking from a white van into her house. There was a white van outside her house which gave a creepy effect. I often see in horror movies the killers with vans, obviously to move their evidence. So this was something we could use to our advantage. We had to make sure however we didn't get the number plate.

We got this whole idea about the layre and police from the film 'Se7en' and thought it would be a really interesting scene to film, and also give our film that extra motive. You often see in horror movies a secret basement or hideout which makes a good effect in the movie.
Whenever the killer is in the layre I think a good idea would to add a few scary effects onto our original music which plays throughout the film.
.
.

.
When the killers in the layre this is also the part when we see flashbacks zooming into various newspapers of previous killings.
The flashbacks will have special sound effects as the visuals will
be more intense. After each flash back we thinking of adding either a negative or white effect. This will just make the visuals look more realistic. I'll be doing more research into flashbacks with the movie 'Jonny Depp is Sweeney Todd'

We still have a few more shots to film then that will be it! So hopefully only one more session left. This will be of the second idea we thought if which I posted on a previous blog.
